Getting cobalt router table dialed in

this cobalt router table is new to me.  I got the bead and cove bits  for 1/4 and my strips are 3/16.

I can't seem to get a center line marked on the test strips.  The marker just smears on the wood.  Should I be using paint instead of markers. trying to post a picture but not sure it's working.
