Several years ago I built a Chesapeake 16 (from plans) and paddle it on our local estuary. I have found that in glassy conditions it tracks well but once a slight breeze arrives, the boat develops what is known as a “weather cock”, it turns into the wind.

Is there anyway of trimming the boat to get rid of this annoying tendency. Had I known of this I would have installed a rudder ~ but decided against it in order to keep things simple.

Would some form of skeg, or short keel near the stern eliminate this (annoying) problem ?
