A Skerry Project, and Some Cool Innovations

I built a Skerry from a kit over a year from 2022 to 2023.  It was quite a bit of work, but it turned out pretty good.  By pretty good I mean that it doesn't leak, and all of the lines are straight.  The directions were confusing, but after rereading them many times, they usually made sense.  I finished the boat with the recommended varnish interior and white exterior.

There were two innivations I implemented for this project.  First, I installed a forward facing rowing system from Gig Harbor Boat Works.  This is great because you get to face the direction the boat is going while rowing.  The rowing motion feels natural too.  The oars I have are spruce wood, made by Shaw and Tenney.  The oars are beautiful and they feel great.  Second, I created a loading system so that I can transport the boat on top of a truck rack, eliminating the need for a trailer.  A simple hand cart can then be used to get the boat to the water.

I finally got to enjoy the fruits of my labor, taking the boat to a lake on a hot summer day.  The skerry was an absolute joy.  She feels sturdy, strong, and roomy.  I look forward to many years of fun, recreation, and enjoying nature and being out on the water.

   Beautiful interior finish!
