Hi, all. I recently installed ash carlins on my Mill Creek 16.5. I was not able to get the ash to lay vertically between the tabs attached to the deck beam so they are “twisted” a bit (ash may not have been the best choice since it does not flex well). The epoxy has set. Do I need to plane the carlin faces to vertical, or can I leave the twist in and just apply the coaming to them without flush face contact? I hope my explanation is clear. I expect the answer will be “plane the carlins to vertical”, but want to be sure before I start taking material off. Thanks for any insight you have.
If you could add a picture that would help but I don’t think you need to plane the carlins. They have a natural roll in them that matches the sheer clamps. Use the radius guide to check how well the deck will fit. I had to sand where the carlins attached to the bulkheads though.
I added a picture of the coaming. They also flare out naturally with no sanding or planing of the carlins
Thank you! This answers my question completely. The intersection of the deckbeam and the carlins is not nearly as pretty on mine, but I figure it will all be covered up by the deck and the noseblock once finished.
