I built this boat from the CLC plan almost in my parent’s garage almost 30 years ago, about 1996/97.
I used the boat “regularly” after building it…so like ~5-10 times every summer - for about 5 or 6 years, but eventually I got married and moved away. I didn’t have time or opportunity to use it any more.
Since then, it sat in my mom’s garage in MA for about 20 years, but she passed away last Feb, and I now need to sell it.
The images don’t show the rudder or the seat, but I have both. I removed the rudder to transport the boat to my home in CT, and I do have the original seat as well (it’s 30 years old, so it might need replacing, but maybe it’s totally fine?)
During construction, I made a mistake with the cutout for the cockpit: my cockpit ended up as an oval instead of being pear shaped. I also decided against cutting open the deck for the full-size square/rectangular hatches. Instead, I cut round holes and used screw-down deck plates, both fore and aft. They’re great, but obviously a little less accessible than the larger hatches called for in the plan.
For 30 years old, the boat seems to be in great shape. Structurally, the hull looks totally solid and unchanged over time. The deck is also solid, and the finishes of both are good for their age…the images for this post were taken after I sprayed and lightly scrubbed the deck and hull to remove dust, etc. so the boat was still wet when I took the pictures. As a result, the boat look snazzier than it is when dry (both the black hull and the varnished deck are shinier when wet than when dry.)
There is also some light rubbery residue stuck to the deck from the shock-cords straps that deteriorated over time. (I removed the straps but didn’t go at the deck residue very aggressively when I did my cleaning.)
I’m sure a basic sanding/varnish job will bring the finish of the varnished deck back to perfect (from already really good.) You could do the same to the black paint on the hull - the boat looks great now, but it would look like new without much effort.
One last thing: with the little bit of catching up I’ve done on the CLC webpage, it sounds like newer specs call for fiberglass matte over deck as well as for the hull itself. This boat has matte under the black paint only, not for the deck…so the deck is varnish only (or maybe clear epoxy + varnish, I can’t remember.)
I’m hoping to find a good home for this boat. I think $500 is a good price. Let me know if you’re interested!
