I have bought myself a cocktail class racer kit that I intend to use less as a racer (not at all) but as more of a single seater pleasure cruiser to ride around in on my little lake, so I am not concerned with keeping the craft as light as possible, or breaking any rules in relation to racing limitations.
First, I know there is a cutout for an inspection hole in the forward bulkhead, but not in either of the side “pockets” created between the side panels and tank sides that would otherwise be sealed off. Are these pockets to be intentionally left in a sealed state to act as internal “pontoons” giving the craft balance, or can I add some inspection plates to check the internals, and/or cut slots to run steering through? I had also briefly considered putting an enlarged internal fuel tank in each “pontoon” but figured the added fuel weight (of 30ish lbs?) could present itself as a ballast balancing issue. Any insight on the importance (or lack there of) these “internal side pontoons” would be greatly appreciated.
Second, I have no real good purchase options for new 6 or 8 HP motors in my area, but I do have a few good options for new 10HP engines around me. Despite not being race legal, does anyone have any experience with throwing a 10HP on one of these designs?
Third, I am planning on staining it (one solid color, so I am not worried about bleed or wicking) with a water based stain prior to assembly, does anyone have any brand recommendations that they know will work well while not interfering with the epoxy coating?
