Conversion from Sloop to Lug Sail

I recently acquired from its builder a take-apart Passagemaker that I’d love to sail, but it came with the sloop rig and I realize that I am definitely a balanced-lug man for a variety of reasons. If anyone knows where I might find a lug setup to purchase or trade for, I’d appreciate hearing. I’m in New Hampshire. LOVE this boat for rowing and trolling-motoring but I’m itching to sail in a way that matches my physical capabilities and skill-set. Also if anyone can chime in on the level of difficulty for making the conversion, that would be helpdul. I have done some woodworking (musical instruments and basic carpentry).

I learned on sloops and love the look, but I converted mine to lug rig. It wasn’t hard. I bought the sail kit from Sailrite. You need a good sewing machine and a bit of know how. It took a full day. Not show quality but it’s fine. I made the mast from box store lumber . I bought a 2x8 and cut two good lengths from it and glued them together after flipping one end for end and over so any movement would cancel. I do have a decent wood shop so that is a big plus. . I seem to remember the manual and plans were a bit at odds as to mast width and thickness. I think I worked through this problem on the forum. You need to make and install the mast step and make a hole in the forward deck. The gunter rig looks nice but I found it hard to manage- the Jib sheets would get hung up often. It’s also a bit of a pain to set up. The lug is so easy to put on take off and think it sails just about as well. The ease of setup more than makes up for any performance loss. I think it’s worth the effort.

Thanks very much for your reply and testimony, Steve. Your message is helpful and affirming.
