I find my hand tires on long sails in my eastport pram. Especially when wind is 10 or better. Has anyone rigged a mainsheet tackle? Is there already a discussion on this on the forum?
Do you have the original Mark I sail or the current Mark II version?
I have the Mark I, and it is tiring to manage the sail in a stiff wind. With the Mark I configuration, you have to hold the mainsheet line directly in your hand. From what I have seen, the Mark II setup uses a bridle at the back of the boat, running through a pulley on the boom and back to your hand. This halves the force needed.
For my Mark I sail, I tied a loop under the center seat and the daggerboard case. Then, I attached the mainsheet to that loop right in front of the daggerboard case, running it through a pulley on the boom and back to my hand. This makes it much easier to hold and positions the mainsheet better. The original direct-to-hand line changes the sail shape depending on how you hold it. With one end fixed to the boat, the boom position is more predictable, resulting in less sail twist.
I also think this keeps the line a bit more out of the way compared to the bridle approach—though it is a very small boat, so everything is always a little in the way! I can add a picture of my setup on the next nice day.
If you have the Mark II sail and bridle setup, you might consider running the mainsheet from the boom, down to the bridle pulley, back up to the boom pulley, and then to your hand. That would give you one more level of purchase to reduce the required strength, though you might need a longer mainsheet line.
