Help! Frustrated using Schooner Varnish

I can’t seem to get a smooth finish rolling& Tipping the interior of my Annapolis Wherry using Schooner varnish! Always leaves little “speckles"/bumps” ?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Have you watched Nick’s YouTube videos on varnishing. Fascinating to watch and his technique is easy to learn and works great. d

For us newbies, who is ‘Nick’, and can you provide a link to the video?

Nick Schade. Sorry. Here is the link https://youtu.be/XS67zGTGuuQ?si=5d3co9qdZSZ6BVGV

And another one https://youtu.be/VJnP8Gw6OS8?si=H9OUKxhwMD8GrAby

I learned a huge amount from watching these videos.

Notice, he doesn’t roll. Foam brush only in small sections in order to maintain a wet edge side by side. It will be harder in a bigger boat

Also, I presume that you have vacuumed both the boat and the space you are varnishing really well?

Since I just just the boat parts this past week, I definitely not ready to Varnish yet!

@Daniel_Thaler , thanks for the link!

I would like to add something that wasn’t covered. The issue of dust particles that are in the air that fall into the varnish during application. Professional paint shops have “clean rooms” with HEPA filters to eliminate dust, you don’t have that. To reduce dust try to clean your shop a much as you can. Use freshly cleaned clothes, put on a shower cap for hair falling into the wet varnish. I use a pump up bug sprayer to wet down the floor where you will be working including spray your shoes and lower pants. When you are finished varnishing don’t walk around your boat inspecting your work this will stir up more dust, leave the area immediately when the job is complete. Or you can do what Nick does and take your boat to a paint shop and have them spray on some automotive paint clear coat in their clean room

I agree with the dust issue 100%! I thought I was fighting “bubbles” in the varnish until I turned out the lights and lit up a strong flashlight! Dust in the air so fine I couldn’t even see it otherwise! The bright flashlight in a dark room is a good way to find out if you have dust in the air.
