How to finish canoe seats?

Just received my unfinished ash canoe seats from clc. How are they to be finished? Do I just varnish over the cane and all? Coat of epoxy first? Any advice appreciated.

Asked this same question to CLC directly, John H responded that they just varnish the seats (and the Yoke).
