I'm beginning to think about rigging my lug rigged dory. any thoughts on how to add a block and cleat for the main sheet?
I don't think you need it. The sheet for the balanced sail is very easy to hold. Usually you only need a couple of fingers. The helm is also well enough balanced that you can usually let go of the tiller for a few seconds if necessary.
I consider an uncleated main sheet an essential safety feature. If I'm ever in danger of capsizing, all I have to do is let go of the main sheet.
That feeling of absolute security makes the boat a joy to sail.
There's always ratchet blocks.
"Used on PocketShip, and any other CLC boat with a large mainsail. The essential value is that it keeps your hand from getting tired, yet it isn't dangerous like cleating the mainsheet would be. A small amount of pressure causes the sheet to jam in the block, taking the pressure off your hand, but if you ease up on pressure, the mainsheet runs free."

I've got three of these on 2 boats. They definitely work well and help in keeping hands and elbows functional after hours of sailing.
