I’m new and lazy. If this topic is covered, please point me there.
Can lug sails be good for larger boats such as cruisers?
I have other newbie questions
Does it ever make sense to use a jib with a lug rig?
How does a lug rig impact keel design?
I will resist the urge to pepper this forum with naive questions but if anyone is feeling patient, please point me toward things to read.
Thanks
The largest boat I have personally sailed with a lugsail was my Faering Cruiser. It used a balanced lug. The boat was over 22’ long and fully loaded displaced almost 3/4 ton. It sailed just fine with that rig.
Newbie questions:
- Yes, as long as the boat and sail plan were designed for it
- The same as any other sail rig type. The sail plan and boat have to be designed to work with each other.

Thanks! Id like to just say thanks but apparently my body is too short.
Hi, Tim. I am now the very proud owner of the Faering Cruiser Laszlo owned. I took her out for a week of daysailing and quickly learned that the rather large lug rig is a joy to sail. She is powerful and relatively maneuverable. She is difficult to bring about in light winds, but a jibe is easy. She is also a bit difficult to make a controlled landing at a pier because she is so powerful, but once you learn to anticipate and line her up, you can make rather spectacular landings.
