Paint and then varnish?

I’ve been building a Skerry, and I’m about to finish it. My plan is to paint the exterior, varnish the interior, rails, rudder and centerboard.

  1. Does this make sense, or is there some reason to change my decision about the rails, rudder and centerboard?

  2. Paint the exterior first, or varnish first?

I have a slight preference for painting the exterior first, because I’ve found the exterior easier to work on in general, and this will give me some experience with finishing surfaces before working on the interior.
