Petrel cockpit and recess

Good morning!

I decided to try making the cockpit and recess from cedar strips. Here is my current thought process:

This piece of cardboard looks close to the size and shape I need! Let’s add some strips to it.

The strips somewhat fit. Now let’s check against the actual cockpit shape.

I taped one side of the strips and slid some wood glue between the strips on the other:

The recess looks funny to me at this point.

For some reason, I can never find my pencil!

Now comes my question:

Will I be alright waiting until I glass the deck, or should I glass these pieces beforehand?

Also, how many layers (I have 4 ounce E glass) would you recommend for the interior and exterior cockpit? How about deck and hull? (No rock gardens for me)

Thank you!

Enjoy your weekend!

hi KW,

i have built a petrel with a cedar sill (vs using the plywood)

like you, i used the pattern for the big round piece and then glued it in. see the picture below.

but for the crescent shaped gap i glued individual cedar pieces into the gap and did not try to make it as one piece and bend it in shape. the picture shows the final result.

while a different boat, this picture shows what i mean by hand fitting the pieces into the crescent area

in terms of glass, i put three layers of 4 oz s glass under the aft part of the cockpit and 2 layers in the forward section of the cockpit…only one layer of 4 oz on the outside.

you need it reinforced if it is pushed downward…hence the extra layers on the inside of the deck.

hope this helps.

My technique is to strip the recess in place then glass it and the deck at the same time. I live in Florida so not many rocks. My default is 4oz glass both inside and outside. For my race boats, I went with 4oz S glass inside and 3 oz tight weave outside to save weight.

How about gator teeth?

Gators do not like the taste of varnish.
