In dry fitting the mast thru the forward seat cutout, mast partner and into the mast step, I find there is a fair amount of play for the mast. Is this normal? My cutout is not quite precise - it could be squared up a bit ( I’m not sure how yet but..) but the mast partner and step are both preformed and allow the play. Should I be concerned? Thanks.

Bruce, some slop at the partner is pretty normal on these lug rigs, the step is what actually carries the load and keeps things aligned. Once the halyard and any downhaul are tensioned it’ll snug up more than you’d think dry fitting on the bench. I’d hold off tightening up that cutout until after your first sail, a little play there also gives you room to fine tune rake for balance. If it’s still bothering you after that, a couple wraps of leather or friction tape on the mast at the partner is an easy fix that’s fully reversible.
