Installed my centerboard today, but it didn’t go all the way in. The aft end is about 3/4” proud of the keel. Obviously this is intolerable as the board would bear all the weight of the boat if it went on the trailer like this. It’s a kit boat, so I assume the parts are right. There was no test fit, as the board was built after the boat was well along. It’s not sitting on a pile of rope, and I vacuumed out really well before assembly. Didn’t see any large lumps of epoxy inside. Tomorrow, I will pull the access plates, as well as put playdoh on the tightest parts. The tolerances for 2 and maybe 4 are the closest. I’m betting it’s 2. What are you going to do?
I put a bunch of Playdoh beads along the edge and then saw which ones got squished when the board bottomed out. The answer is 4. The spacers around the sheave are larger than the diameter of the pulley. Probably saved 5 minutes by just cutting random squares for shims, instead of tracing pulley! Doh!
NGL: that hurt a little bit. Unfortunately no good access to those shims, so the board suffers on a portion that will hopefully never see light again. Epoxy and paint, then lay it in, and try not to think about it.
At least you didn’t have to pay a yard to do it.
