Problem with Piantedosi rail

Hello,
I built my Annapolis Tandem Wherry in 2016. It has had pretty good use since then, but i had an equipment failure when out rowing last weekend. The main rail of the drop in unit failed where the L shaped bracket that connects to the stays is located. Is it possible to purchase a new rail only or do i have to get a whole new unit?

Mick,

This forum is for builders helping other builders and your question is a CLC company question. CLC folks don’t regularly read this forum so if you want support it’d be faster to contact them using the online contact form. The form also lists a contact phone number.

Laszlo

Hello Laszlo, thanks for your reply. I reached out to CLC via the Online contact form before posting here but didn’t get a reply. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced anything similar, and if so, what they had done about it. It appears not!

So has this rig been used a lot in salt water? That looks like crevice corrosion maybe with galvanic corrosion between the screws and aluminum. Anyway I’d also try Piantedosi directly and see what you get. Best of luck. If you get it fixed I’d suggest assembling it with LanoCote between bracket and rail and on screws and wash all the parts down every season.

Yes, i typically row down a tidal creek and out into Charleston harbour. I think you might be right re: corrosion. Will take your suggestions on board(!) and will also apply to my second unit. I wonder though if i might simply turn the monorail upside down?

I think turning the monorail upside down would work…with 1 proviso. There are pre-drilled holes for the L shaped bracket, but not for the main bracket that attaches to the bottom of the rail. It looks like there is a threaded insert in the existing holes that i would need to replicate. Anyone have any idea where to source these?

Hello Mick:

You might contact RowingRigs.com. Some of their text suggests they might manufacture a rail used in the Row Wings and they might source one for you.

I’ve always had my best luck communicating with CLC, Adirondack Rowing, etc by telephone rather than the web page “contact us” forms.

Good luck,

Howard

Hello Howard,
Thanks for this - both parallel communication channels are being pursued!

UPDATE: i got in touch with CLC and they said they would try and source a rail. I didn’t hear anything after that, and did not push it as i contacted Piantedosi directly. Gary was very helpful saying i could fix myself or he could send me a pre-drilled rail for $125 + shipping. I went for the latter, it arrived shortly afterwards and although i have not had chance to attach all the bits, it looks good. Excellent service!
