I purchased a Chesapeake 17 kayak and a Mk2 sailrig (both designed by Chesapeake Light Craft and built around 2005) last summer in Oregon for $1,200. The kayak and SailRig were functional when I bought them, but I started to refurbish both. Once refurbished/completed, the kayak can be used by itself or along with the sailrig (outriggers, crossbeams, and ~40sf sail).
Due to an upcoming move, I need to sell the whole setup.
I believe it would cost more than $5,000 to buy kits for the kayak and SailRig today (including shipping). This is a great opportunity to acquire both at a steep discount (with most of the build already completed by the previous builder).
Highlights of refurb work I’ve done on the kayak:
-Removed rigging (still usable, set aside)
-Removed relatively worn deck (need another sheet of plywood to complete the refurb)
-Took out messy internal fiberglass and started to remove the relatively large fillets inside the boat (with intention of replacing with slimmer fillets to reduce weight). The kayak weighed 60-65 lbs before I removed rigging and the deck.
-Began to plane the stringers along the edges down to remove dirty edges and facilitate addition of epoxy for sealant/waterproofing and new deck.
Highlights of refurb work I’ve done on the sailrig:
-Removed decks from floats/amas (again quite worn)
-Sanded crossbeams down to bare wood in preparation for fiberglass/epoxy/varnish.
Included:
-C17 kayak hull
-Aluminum mast and small sail (40sf?)
-Rigging components/lines
-Ama/outrigger hulls
-Akas/crossbars
-Leeboard
-Hatch covers
-New (but creased) seat and new seat backband
-Keel bow/stern protection kit (funnel/epoxy; not pictured)
-Rudder
-Footbraces (Keepers?)
-Build plans for Chesapeake 17 and the latest version of the sailrig (Mk3). This would give you the right to build a new sailrig from scratch with these plans if you so desired.
-Paper construction manual for sailrig (I have versions for Mk2 and Mk3); I don’t have a manual for the kayak build, but you can purchase a manual from CLC (paper or PDF)
-Fiberglass cloth (from CLC) for protection of inside of hull and deck (both need fiberglass).
-Sealed containers of marine epoxy resin/hardener sufficient for remainder of build (MAS)
-Unopened quart of Interlux Toplac Plus off-white paint to paint hull of kayak and/or hulls of outriggers (oyster shell?)
-Some usable Schooner varnish that I’ve used for other CLC builds (not sure how much I have - maybe a quart).
-Okoume offcuts from other builds (3mm/4mm) if you want them - sufficient to put decks on outriggers/amas.
Not included:
-4’x8’ sheet of okoume plywood for new kayak deck (you can purchase this from Edensaw in Port Townsend or Crosscut Hardwoods in Seattle for ~$80-100).
