Hi,
I’m going to be building the sail component for my NED this spring. I have been looking for the dimensions of the sloop sail rig (main and jib) but have had zero luck. Does anyone have the luff, leech and foot? Also, has anyone found other sails (ie, laser, optimus.) that fit the NED?
Thanks
How accurate do they need to be? If you’re going to be making them from scratch you’ll also have to allow for the curves to form the pockets and design all the reinforcements, edges, etc. If you’re a good enough sailmaker to do all that, you should be able to get the dimensions from the scale drawings on the CLC NED page or the drawing in the sailing component kit description.
In either case, you should be able to use a component that you already have (tiller, mast, the hull, etc.) as your reference, count its length in pixels on the image, calculate a scale factor, count pixels on the sail images and apply the scale factor to get your desired lengths. Again (and apologies if you’re an experienced sailmaker and I’m stating the obvious to you), the measurements are just the first step.

You could also buy the NED model kit and you’d have the exact sail dimensions at 1:8 scale. I actually have a kit I’d ship to anyone who wants it. When I was choosing a boat, I bought and built the Skerry kit, then bought the NED kit but decided on the Southwester and started building the full-size boat before working on the Northeaster model.
All of the other info regarding the 3-D nature of sails would still apply of course, as the model sails are flat. They do depict the stitching, reef points, and reinforcements though.
Have you asked Sailrite if they have a kit?
