I finished building my Chesapeake triple and was planning to build the sailrig, but along came a Chesapeake 17lt and sailrig on fb marketplace. Aside: the guy I bought it from happened to be my dad’s childhood friend and neighbor about 70 years ago and 3000 miles away from here. Small world! Anyway, now I want to use it for both the 17lt and the triple, which each have different deck radiuses. I also realized he must have been using the amas backwards as the holes don’t align when oriented correctly. So I started the alignment process as described in the plans so I could drill new holes and fill the other ones. In doing so I realized that based on how the akas had been trimmed to fit the wrong way, I would also need to reduce the beam 3/4” on each side and trim off some of the other aka. Not a big deal, but alternatively, I could leave the akas where they are, and instead move the mast partner, leeboard bracket, and fairlead to the other aka and redo the aka spacers. When redoing the aka spacers, I could design for being able to switch between the 17lt and the triple. I think the loads are mostly compression (which the lashings handle), with only minimal shear and torsion loads. So I’m thinking I’ll build two sets of spacers and instead of filleting to the underside of the aka, I’ll make the spacers “I” beam shaped. For the interface between the spacer and the aka, I’ll attach heavy duty Velcro to keep things aligned and provide a little bit of resistance to shear loads. Thoughts?
