Thanks to all for the replies and ideas. I will see what I can do.

I may have solved the problem. I soaked a clean rag in paint thinner and scrubbed all the sticky areas. It reduced them dramatically and left me with a rag that was yellow coated. This may have been varnish that for what ever reason didn't harden. I am moving forward and hoping for the best.
