I’m building a LT17, and with the rear bulkhead positioned as per the plans, the aft top deck when positioned to go over the bulkhead is at least1.5 inches short of the stern. Also, the top of the hull sides measured 17’. The specs on the 17LT say it should be 16’11”. Did I get parts for both the 17, Al 17LT? Any thoughts?
Thanks, Mike
hi mike,
is there anyway you can snap a couple pictures and attach them…this may help.
the placement of the deck on the CLC 17 is a bit odd in terms of the line-up because they cut the pieces oversize and then you need to trim them back to match the hull and the inside of the coaming.
that said, you should have 100% coverage of the hull from end to end when the two deck pieces (for and aft) are in place…they should not run short of the ends…that would be a big problem.
so if its short of the stern…it needs to be slid back… as long as you can properly place the cockpit within the locaiton its supposed to be in and you can cover the hull stem-to-stern with the deck…you are fine.
the length overall of the 17LT is, as you say is 16’ 11" …but you measurement is within an inch of that…so i don’t see any problem.

Thanks Howard,
I’ll get some pics later. My main issue is that I’ll have to move the aft bulkhead about 2” further aft in order for the rear top deck to cover it. Seems like a not to me. Especially for something that’s cut on a CNC machine . I’ll get you those pics soon. Thanks for the advice!
Cheers,
Michael
I’m thinking I may have to scarf on a piece to the aft deck to make it long enough to fit over the bulkhead
Cheers,
Michael
mike,
i also wanted to clarify, are you building from a kit or plans and your own material?
if from a kit, its pretty much impossible that they would miscut it as its all computer cut…so i would definitely speak to CLC if that’s the case. i know the front deck needs to be scarfed out of two pieces as the underlying material is 4X8 foot sheets.
you might want to double-check the rear bulkhead to bow length measurement if its from a kit…that appears to be the only other piece that could be mispostioned and create the probem you are describing.
i built three CLC 17 LTs a number of years back and they were great boats that i also used to introduce a lot of people to kayak building. fast and pretty.
Yeah it’s a kit, and I did more measurements and pretty sure it’s a 17, not a 17LT as I ordered. When I line up the bulkheads as per the 17 measurements, all fits as it should. Unfortunately I didn’t order a 17😂. I left them
A message. I’m sure we’ll find a way to make this right
Cheers,
Michael
However things end up, as long as the deck fits up with the hull sides, and fits end to end, I don’t think moving the bulkhead at the back of the cockpit is a big deal. You might have to do some minor shaping modification to the bulkhead, but thats what I did on both my Shearwater Sport and Chess 18 - moved the bulkhead back about 1.5 inches (and/or slid the deck forward just a bit, concurrently) because I like some extra space behind my butt to store things - a good place to have the instantly accessible water bottle, etc.. You loose just a bit of floatation volume (and gain the need to bail a couple of extra gallons if capsized) and need to make sure you still trust the strength of the aft lip support for the cockpit rim, but for me all is well after 5 years of use. Bottom line, if CLC made a parts mistake, by all rights ask them to fix that, but in the end, I think slight moves on (especially) this aft cockpit bulkhead are easy - and you actually might like having the storage space thereby created. I do.
Actually, all is well. I was taking measurements with the parts laying flt on the table, not wired together. The hull is now together with all the fillets and glass taping done. Final sanding w/ 220 tomorrow, then hopefully glass the outside of the hull Friday. Thank goodness for the AC in my garage. It’s been in the 90’s here in Arizona! Not good for epoxying!
Cheers, Michael
Also, I’ve chosen to use the cockpit opening from the wood duck boat. Makes it a lot easier for me to get in and out, but still can have a spray skirt when needed.
Hi Howard,
I got all my confusion about the dimensions solved and have just finished the second coat of epoxy on the outside of the hull. Your boats look great painted, and although I was planning to varnish, I’m re thinking that. Did you spray, or roll/brush the paint?
Cheers, Mike
Glad you got the measurements solved. Would be great to learn how you sorted it out?
On the paint, I rolled it on with a foam roller and tipped it with a foam brush just like the CLC videos on the topic.
It was pretty easy. Your boat looks great
Thanks Howard,
I measured with the parts flat on the table. CLC’s measurements are taken with the stem and stern stitched together.
Cheers,
Michael
