Tying fisherman's knots for deck lines and bungees

I paddle a Shearwater Merganser I built in 2004.  It is still in good shape.  I took off my deck lines and bungees and varnished the deck.  I use the Chesapeake Craft fisherman's knot to tie my deck lines and bungees, but always have problems taking out the slack.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I tie the first knot but have trouble getting the slack out when I tie the second knots.

Does anyone have a good technique to tie tight deck lines and bungees with a fisherman's knot?  Thanks.

After tying the first knot, stretch the bungie very tight and use a small pair or vise grips as a clamp to take the tension.  This give you extra length to tie the second knot.  Once that is done, remove the vice grips and even out the bungie tension.

   Thanks.

Tight bungees are fine, but decklines not so good. For safety’s sake, you need to be able to actually grab them, even wearing gloves to haul yourself back onto/ into the boat.
