If you were refinishing a canoe and needed to remove the varnish what would be the best way? How much of the old varnish would you need to remove? I have been sanding for what feels like decades to get the varnish off and not through the epoxy under it. In spots I am down to epoxy but there are still patches of varnish. Would it be ok to reapply new varnish over those patches and would they disappear?
On teak I have used heat to soften and then scrap the varnish off. I am not sure how it will effect the epoxy. I would think the heat, if too much is used, will also weaken/soften the epoxy.
There are probably others on this forum who can answer this.
You can revarnish over existing varnish, it is done all of the time when we put multiple layers of varnish on a boat. You do want old varnish to be scuffed up for adhesion and not peeling off.
