Two questions for anyone who has experience with this rig I would like to build it to use with the Bear Mountain Boats Coppermine that I am currently building. The Coppermine is about eighteen feet long with alot of beam, but it also has a square stern for a motor. Question one - could I use the sailing rig with the motor still attached (perhaps making the sailing rig rudder offset from center?). Question two - regardless of the motor question above, in the configuration I am proposing, could two people sail at one time? Thanks for the advice.....really like the design of the sailing rig vs. others for stability.
I have the CLC SailRig on a CLC kayak. You'll certainly be able to sail with two people, as that is within the displacement of the canoe you're building. As for the motor, many people mount small motors on the rear crossarm rather than on the stern, and steer with the rudder.
I appreciate you taking the time to reply. As far as the sailing with two people question, I'm sure from a capacity standpoint we are fine; my question was more about physical room for the 2nd person - there are only a few pictures of the rig on a canoe, I was just wondering if the second person would be comfortable in the bow while under sail.
Regarding the motor question, I chose the Coppermine because of the square stern and the ability to mount a motor wihout use of a crossarm. I would like to be able to go from motoring to sailing without having to remove the motor from the stern. I was wondering if I could modify the rudder to either sit to one side, or maybe construct it as a double rudder similar to what you might see on a Hobie.
