Cracked passagemaker boom end

i knocked the boom for my passagemaker off the stand i was using to varnish it, and cracked the end. i put the screw in to turn it like a corn cob but it landed on the screw when it fell and the leverage cracked it. i put the screw back in because it opened up the crack enough so you can see it. the piece was coated with epoxy prior to the three or so coats of varnish i put on, and will now probably be removing. it’s still solidly attached, i’d have to break it off entirely to be able to completely coat it with epoxy, which i don’t want to do. anyway, i don’t know.

what should i do to fix it? thanks in advance!

If it was mine, I’d remove the screw and sand off the varnish from the end for the entire length of the crack and maybe an inch more. Then I’d put the screw back in to open the crack, apply unthickened epoxy into the crack and remove the screw to let the crack close in around the epoxy. Finally, I 'd wrap the cracked end with fiberglass. One layer of 4 oz around the sides with a completely overlapped side should be plenty, combined with the epoxy in the crack, to permanently fix the problem.

Good luck,

Laszlo

Thanks, I think that is going to be the plan. At least it won’t set me back too far!
