Epoxy and maybe varnish before install?

My passagemaker dinghy is progressing well - getting ready to install the front and back seats after some trimming to account for my chubby fillets.

Is it OK if I epoxy the seats BEFORE installing? What about varnishing before install? Seems like I’d do a better job on both laying flat on my work table instead of leaning over the boat.

I’m thinking about trying this approach: Wiping Marine Varnish

Thanks folks!

Ken

Epoxy before install - no problem, actually an excellent idea.

The only way prefinishing (varnish or paint) will work out well is if the part is screwed into place with no further application of epoxy or glass.

You can’t apply epoxy over varnish so you’d have to mask off the areas that will be getting more epoxy on them as part of the install. Bad masking will cause joint failure. Even if you get the masking right, you then have to fair the new epoxy, which will involve sanding and the strong probability of sanding into the varnish. You won’t save any work and stand to make yourself a lot more.

Thanks Laszlo. I was afraid you’d say that about varnish. Guess I’ll have to test it on scrap wood.

Cheers,
