I have gotten a little farther in the process of stripping the deck of a 17 foot Petrel, and I am trying to figure out what happens in the middle part of the boat.
How many strips run the full length of the deck? That curve between I believe forms 9 and 10 is where I am trying to figure out my next move.
the picture below are not great but based on what i can discern from when i built my petrel, between two and three strips from the shear inward had full length strips:
so i would say, based on your last picure that you need to carry back the three strips you have in the picture and fill it into the shear…so that when you cut out your sill opening, you will not have any gaps.
here is another picture with the sill being laid in (this sill was built up by hand per the pattern). (note the yellow shear line is the top most strip of the hull so everything on top of tht is the deck)
Before I start stripping the deck, my technique is to use the template for the cockpit opening/recess to mark the top of the forms so I know where I don’t have to strip. You are past that point, but at this point suggest that you use the template to trace over the strips installed. In this picture, you can see that I have done that on the deck of my Aleutesque build. With the cockpit cut out marked, it is easier to see which strips will go full length.
I decided to spend the evening making some progress and (of course) some mistakes.
First on the agenda was to finish cutting out the paper for making the hole for the cockpit and recess. Drawing this let me determine that I have two strips on each side that need to run full length. Hopefully, the photo below shows the overlap.
I made a last minute decision to forgo the accent strips on this (my first) build in favor of some measure of simplicity.
I truly appreciate all who join on this journey!
Two important lessons I have learned this week:
Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.
By the way, that materials chart is pretty handy! I had not yet seen it. Going through a mental checklist eased my mind a bit on some upcoming steps and whether I have what I need to proceed.
