Nesting a skerry around a Kaholo 12-6 for transport

In my never-ending puzzling to stack watercraft for cartopping, I’m wondering if it’s possible to have an upside down skerry “nest” around a Kaholo 12-6 without the two touching. I’m considering a skerry for my next build but have completely run out of roof rack real estate. My concern is whether or not the skerry’s thwarts and supports would allow this or interfere in some way. I can’t find any dimensions showing the space between the thwart supports, or the depth at which the thwarts sit below the gunwales. I’d be building the skerry with inwales but I can’t imagine that’d be the limiting factor (but if I’m missing something please let me know!). Thanks.

I car topped my skerry for the first year or two. I made it work but it wasn’t easy. I got a trailer when CLC had a sale on the Trailex trailers and never looked back. The skerry hull may only be a bit over 100 lbs but it’s bulky with more beam and hull depth than you realize. It adds a lot of aero drag to the vehicle as well. I’d be more likely to trailer it and come up with braces and pads to put the Kaholo in the skerry on the trailer.

Hi Robert, I really appreciate your reply! I’ve been able to awkwardly muscle a 12 foot Sailfish atop my truck but the Skerry sounds like another beast, altogether. What I didn’t mention in my post is that I’ll be building a teardrop soon and am trying to figure out a safe way to pull that with two kayaks atop it, and the to-be-built Skerry and Kaholo on top of the truck. Good problem to have! May need to draft a second car/driver on my camping trips! Thanks again. Patrick

I know the Sailfish well. My aunt built a plywood one ages ago and I learned to sail on it 50+ years ago.

Look elsewhere in the forum archive for discussion on a side loader for car topping dinghies. I made one for the skerry out of scrap lumber. May be some pix still in there. I was able to use it to solo load the skerry on a CX-5.

Appreciate the lead on the side loader, Robert!
