Ok, so I’m working on the deck panels for by pocketship. Yesterday I glassed the top and used peel ply over the glass. This morning when I went to pull up the peel ply I accidentally grabbed hold of the fiberglass also. (not enough coffee this morning) My brain realized something was wrong before I pulled off the entire sheet, but I did manage to pull up around 6 inches of fiberglass material in the corner.
How to I fix this?
hi dmk…
the answer, as usual is, ‘it depends’.
i would begin by saying that a picture is worth a thousand words, so if you could snap a picture and attach it to your post, we can move from imagining what happened to seeing what happened and offer better advice. that said:
option 1: the glass/epoxy was not fully cured and you simply seperated it from the underlying wood but the glass is otherwise undamaged - you can mix a small batch of epoxy and press the glass back down against the wood with the new epoxy. once it cures, you are good.
option 2, where the glass is damaged or subsequently the epoxy glass fully cured or won’t lay flat - you do a ‘patch’ you will need to cut out the glass that is not attached and sand the edges of the good glass (where it is attached to the wood) and lay in new glass and epoxy and once that cures, you fare/sand it in.
given what you described, i would be careful to ensure i have good epoxy mix/curing. generally, had the epoxy properly cured on a properly prepared substrate, you should not be able to pull it up. Even it there was loose ends that you could grap that were not attached to the wood, it shouldhave ‘broken’ off when you got to the substrate…so the fact that you were able to pull it off the wood is interesting and i would look into why you were able to do that.
Here is a pic of the problem
based on what i can see it looks like the glass is intact. if you can re-epoxy it and compress it down tight enough that it looks like the adjacent area you are fine.
if not, go to option 2.
As far as the cause, incomplete cure caused by low temperatures is my guess.
